Ampleforth College was founded by Benedictines in 1802. Set in its own extensive, beautiful grounds, the College and its prep school, St. Martin’s Ampleforth, are within easy reach of a number of international terminals. Leeds/Bradford, Manchester, Newcastle and East Midlands airports are all between and hour and two hours car journey away.

York, the local railway station, is less than two hours by train from London.There is a staff supervised train to and from London Kings Cross and Edinburgh, Scotland.

Today the College is home to over 560 boys and girls (13-18 years old) with 150 in the prep school (3-13 years old). 85% of students board in the senior school as do over half of the older pupils at the junior school.

Academic Profile
Ampleforth is a highly successful academic school achieving the top grading of ‘excellent’ in every category in its latest inspection report. Over 70% of students gain access to Russell Group universities, or to Sutton Trust top 30 universities. For overseas students the success rate is over 80% and for Chinese students, almost 100%. On average 7-10 students achieve places at Oxford or Cambridge each year.

For those who wish to attend US universities, the college prepares 10-12 students for the SAT tests each year and is an  SAT examination centre. In recent years Ampleforth students have gone on to study at a number of ivy league universities, including Berkley, Yale, Brown, Stamford and McGill.

The curriculum is broad with opportunities for musical, artistic and sporting excellence. Outside the group of specialist music schools, Ampleforth is amongst the top schools in the UK for musical education. There are a huge number of clubs and societies including robotics,jewellery, shooting, Land Rover restoration,riding, chess, art, and the medical society .Each subject also provides extra academic support.

Ampleforth is a seven day a week boarding school with busy weekends.Sporting, cultural and social events take place each weekend and there are frequent trips to local cities.


In the senior school, students join one of ten houses, which becomes their home for their time at Ampleforth. In the early years they are accommodated in small dormitories and in the senior years they have their own room.

Ampleforth has outstanding facilities including modern, purpose-built science laboratories, specialist technology and art facilities, including 3D printing and laser cutter, and its own music school. There are two theatres, a sports centre with swimming, basketball, gymnasium and squash, and extensive outdoor sports facilities. These include rugby and football pitches, an astroturf and nineteen tennis courts. We also have a beautiful golf course in the grounds of the 400 year-old castle which accommodates our prep school and extensive woods and lakes.Our performing arts centre will open in 2016 and we plan to open an equestrian centre.

Ampleforth is an academically successful school with an enviable record for university entrance success. We accept a limited number of overseas applicants to ensure strong integration and the rapid learning of English by all for who it is a second language. We offer EAL classes in three tiers according to the level of need. The first and second tier are offered at no extra charge. The third tier, where one-to-one lessons are provided is charged separately. Students take PET, FCE and IELTS examinations.
